Highlights of the 2 PM Call:

  • Strong spring storm will move into Colorado Wednesday morning with high winds and rain quickly changing to heavy, wet, wind-driven snow and blizzard conditions across the lower elevations.  Effects will continue overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

  • It will feel warm on your way to work/school Wednesday morning until a strong cold front crosses the plains of Colorado late morning.  Precipitation will start as rain with a fairly rapid changeover to snow beginning;

  • Noon to 2 pm Fort Collins/Boulder/Denver/Greeley

  • 1-2 PM Palmer Divide

  • After 2 PM Northeast Plains

  • Potentially damaging winds causing power outages will accompany the snow later Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially east of I-25


  • Impacts:  Afternoon/evening commute on Wednesday will be hazardous/dangerous with heavy, wet, wind-driven snow and blowing snow

    • Remains dangerous over the eastern plains & Palmer Divide through Thursday AM, should see improvement Denver to Fort Collins by Thursday morning.

    • Significant impacts at DIA due to strong winds, low visibility, and blowing snow.

    • Scattered power outages

    • Harsh transition for livestock - shelter if possible

    • Road temperatures will start out warm, some initial melting/slush

    • Rapid cooling will result in icy roads for the late evening commute, faster freeze-up where snow is blowing.


  • Confidence

    • HIGH for winds

    • HIGH for snow amounts in the mountains, foothills, Palmer Divide, and far northeast plains east of Akron-Sterling line

    • LOW-MODERATE for snow amounts I-25 corridor Wednesday afternoon into the afternoon commute. Timing of changeover and exact storm track are factors.  


  • Snowfall Amounts:  snow heavy at times

    • Mountains: 6-14 inches

    • Urban Corridor and Eastern Plains 4-8 inches, heaviest favoring west/south metro Denver to locations just east of I-25

    • Amounts will vary - banded precipitation likely/heavy snow 2” per hour


  • Ending

    • I-25 Urban Corridor Denver - Fort Collins, tapers off late Wednesday night to Thursday AM

    • Eastern Plains: Snow tapers off Thursday morning, but strong winds and blowing snow through the day

    • Mountains: Thursday
