- | Southwest flow aloft will be over the District today, resulting in mostly sunny skies early and very warm temperatures with highs rising into the low to mid 80s on the plains by early afternoon. |
- | Low level moisture is on the increase today across the District, and with sufficient daytime heating isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop over the foothills and adjacent plains by midday to early afternoon. An upper level disturbance will arrive from the southwest by mid to late afternoon, resulting in a better chance of thunderstorms across the District. |
- | Dewpoints will rise into the upper 40s to near 50 this afternoon with stronger storms capable of producing heavy rainfall in a short amount of time. Storm motions will be to the NE at 15-25mph. Storms this afternoon will also have the potential to produce severe weather, including large hail, damaging straight-line winds, and frequent lightning. The best chance of strong thunderstorms will be through early evening, with isolated lingering storms tapering off mid to late evening. |
WORST CASE SCENARIO: A strong or severe thunderstorm stalls along a wind convergence boundary and produces heavy rainfall of up to 2.0" in 60-90 minutes.
A LOOK AHEAD: On Saturday, a strong cold front will approach from the north late in the day, likely resulting in a round of late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms with brief heavy rainfall possible. A much cooler and more stable airmass will settle into the District Saturday night and Sunday. Light rain showers will continue during the overnight period Saturday night, before tapering off early Sunday. Generally dry conditions and well below average temperatures are expected Sunday afternoon.
