Heavy Precipitation Outlook
Flash Flood Prediction Program

COOLER WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS
-A couple of upper level disturbances will move across the District today from southwest to northeast, ahead of an approaching trough of low pressure. Low clouds and fog/drizzle this morning will give way to partial clearing early this afternoon with highs in the mid to upper 50s on the plains.
-Scattered showers and thunderstorms will initially develop by early afternoon as the first disturbance approaches, with additional rounds of showers/storms likely later this afternoon and evening. The strength of thunderstorms will largely hinge on how much clearing occurs from this morning's cloud cover. Short range models indicate some drying aloft by this afternoon, which could potentially allow for enough clearing to support the development of stronger thunderstorms.
-Typical showers and storms will move to the NE at 15-25mph and produce light to moderate rainfall. However, if strong thunderstorms manage to develop then brief heavy rainfall will be possible. Hail of 0.5" in diameter or more will also be possible under stronger storms. The best chance of storms will be through mid-evening, but isolated to scattered light showers will continue possible overnight.
STORM RAINFALL POTENTIAL AND DURATION: Typical showers and weak thunderstorms will produce rainfall amounts of 0.05-0.30" in 10-30 minutes. Strong thunderstorms will be capable of producing rainfall of 0.3-0.7" in 10-30 minutes.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: A strong/severe thunderstorm produces up to 1.5" of rain in 60 minutes or less.

A LOOK AHEAD: Widespread light to moderate rain will develop over the District on Wednesday as the low pressure system moves across the area. However, a cool and stable atmosphere will be in place, therefore heavy rainfall is not expected. Rain will mix with or change to snow across the lower elevations of the District late Wednesday night/Thursday morning, with additional isolated rain/snow showers possible Thursday afternoon and evening.
