Heavy Precipitation Outlook
Flash Flood Prediction Program

WARM WITH SCATTERED LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS
-Significant low level moisture remains in place across the District, though some minor drying at the mid-levels is allowing for skies to start out mostly sunny this morning. Highs today will reach the mid to upper 80s on the plains.
-Isolated thunderstorms will initially develop over the foothills by midday/early afternoon. Thunderstorms will become more numerous and spread onto the plains by mid to late afternoon, with additional thunderstorms likely into the evening hours.
-Storm motions will generally be to the E/SE at 10-15mph, but some storms could exhibit slower and more erratic movement, which along with dewpoints in the low 50s will increase the threat for heavy rainfall. Areas that experienced heavy rainfall yesterday will be more susceptible to excessive runoff issues today.
STORM RAINFALL POTENTIAL AND DURATION: Weak to moderate thunderstorms will produce rainfall amounts of 0.2-0.5" in 10-30 minutes. Strong thunderstorms will produce rainfall amounts of 0.5-1.5" in 10-30 minutes.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: A strong, nearly stationary thunderstorm produces heavy rainfall of up to 3.0" in 90-120 minutes.

A LOOK AHEAD: Drier air will arrive from the southwest on Wednesday, resulting in warmer temperatures and more isolated thunderstorm coverage across the District on Wednesday and Thursday with a reduced threat for heavy rainfall. Highs Wednesday and Thursday will reach the low 90s on the plains. A cold front will arrive on Friday, resulting in increasing moisture and a better chance of thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday with heavy rainfall possible. Highs Friday and Saturday in the mid 80s on the plains.
