Heavy Precipitation Outlook
Flash Flood Prediction Program

WARMER TODAY WITH A CHANCE FOR AFTERNOON/EVENING SHOWER/THUNDERSTORM
-A low-pressure system has finally started to move eastward resulting in NW flow aloft today, combined with dew points in the low to mid 40's will result in a chance for showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with any shower activity coming to an end later this evening.
-Showers and thunderstorms will track from NW to SE today with the best chance for storm development between 12:00-8:00pm, with chances decreasing rapidly this evening as temperatures cool due to the loss of daytime heating.
-The potential for heavy rainfall will be limited by weak instability today, however with an increase in surface moisture and/or training of showers/thunderstorms could bring the potential for brief moderate to heavy rain favoring eastern and southern portions of the District.
STORM RAINFALL POTENTIAL AND DURATION: Typical showers and weak thunderstorms will produce rainfall amounts of TR-0.2" in 10-30 minutes. An isolated stronger thunderstorm will be capable of producing rainfall of 0.2-0.5" in 10-30 minutes.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: A strong thunderstorm or training of thunderstorms results in rainfall of up to 1.0" in 45-60 minutes.

A LOOK AHEAD: High-pressure builds over the next several days resulting in more seasonable temperatures through the rest of the week with mostly dry conditions expected, although if there is enough surface moisture present a weak afternoon shower or thunderstorm can't be ruled out at this time.
