Heavy Precipitation Outlook
Flash Flood Prediction Program

ISOLATED TO WIDELY SCATTERED MID/LATE AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS
-Thunderstorm activity is expected to decrease today as drier air begins to move into the District. There will still be a modest chance for afternoon thunderstorms but storms today will be weaker and less numerous. Highs this afternoon will warm into the upper 80's to lower 90's over the plains.
-Thunderstorms will develop over the mountains and foothills by around noon but it is expected to take a few hours before thunderstorm activity develops over the plains. Upper level steering winds are light from the N/NE which will help to keep the majority of the storms over the foothills. Rain cooled outflow from foothill storms will likely be the trigger needed to get storms to initiate over the plains sometime between 3-4pm.
-Typical storms that develop today will produce light to moderate rain and gusty winds. A strong thunderstorm will have the potential for brief heavy rainfall. Thunderstorm activity is expected to have diminished by around sunset with dry conditions for the remainder of the evening and overnight period.
STORM RAINFALL POTENTIAL AND DURATION: Weak to moderate thunderstorms will produce a trace to 0.3" of rain in 10-30 minutes. A strong thunderstorm will have the potential to produce 0.3-0.8" in 10-30 minutes.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: An anchored or very slow moving strong thunderstorm may produce up to 1.5" of rain in 60 minutes or less.

A LOOK AHEAD: Temperatures will warm 2-3 degrees on Monday with highs over the plains in the low to mid 90's. Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon with most storms producing light to brief moderate rain and gusty winds.
