[Fraug] Essential MHFD Flood Warning Services
by Kevin Stewart
We hope all of you are healthy and weathering the COVID-19 storm in the best possible way. Although this unprecedented event has caused work-related challenges for everyone, we want you to know that our 2020 flood warning services are on target for a "normal" flood season opening day of May 1.
Skyview Weather is under contract once again to provide our flood forecast and notification services directly to MHFD local governments. This long-running program will function as in the past, working closely with our good friends at the National Weather Service. Skyview meteorologists are capable of working from their respective home offices and will do so until the COVID social distancing requirements are lifted. During April they will be calling their primary contact points to verify phone numbers and update their operating procedures accordingly. The MHFD Flood Prediction Center phone number is the same as last year (303.458.0789) and can be used anytime to reach a Skyview forecaster.
Regarding the ALERT System<https://alert5.udfcd.org/>, the gaging stations are nearing 100% ready status. Seasonal startup and associated field maintenance activities are provided by OneRain and Water & Earth Technologies. The COVID situation has not slowed their progress since their work directly involves providing essential products and services that support critical government functions of public safety and emergency response in full compliance with Colorado's Amended Public Health Order 20-24 Implementing Stay At Home Requirements dated March 25, 2020<https://sjbpublichealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Public_Health_Orde...>.
Please let us know if you have any special requests or training needs as you all prepare for your flood season operations. Stay safe and well.
